ABL — I am terribly sorry if I have offended you in any way. I should have looked into Slow Food chapters in Iowa before I wrote this. This idea was brought up by several of the panel members during Slow Food Nation. I can't recall exactly how it was phrased, but I believe Pollan said that the reality of the Iowan farmer today is that he/she can't feed himself/herself anymore. I know this refers mainly to the big monoculture corn and soybean farmers in Iowa and not the farmers that Slow Food Iowa patrons are finding their food from.

Again, I did not mean to insult Iowa. I love Iowa and still visit often. My husband's parents grew up there and one set of grandparents lives in Mount Pleasant and the other set, before they died, lived in Mason City. The comment was merely made to point out that the local-sustainable farming movement is still just a small fraction of the farming sector in this country. Iowa happens to be a state where much of the corn in this country is produced.

I am was confused by your "until there is a slow food chapter in central iowa" comment in this post. There are several slow food chapters. Maybe you could visit http://www.slowfoodiowa.org/ to get some more information.
I moved to Iowa from Virginia and it is a lovely place to live. Supporting organic and sustainable farming practices is a central part of the food culture in the city where I live. Farmers markets occur almost daily durning the growing season with most farmers using sustainable organic methods. Maybe you didn't know anyone from Iowa was reading your blog.
