Finally, a kindred spirit in Southern California. I too am a grass-fed convert thanks to Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma, or... at least I would be if I could find it! It's good to know that Trader Joe's has ground beef, but where can you find steak? How about grass-fed milk and cheese? I guess if it's imported then it's probably safe (since I believe only the US is corn-crazed). Anyways, I just found your blog and really enjoy it. Keep us posted if you find any places for grass-fed-goodness.

Also, I second the question on the Salmon... what did they do to it???

koala2uAny ideas besides Trader Joes for farm raised and range or grass fed beef in Southern California? I live near Chino (site of the infamous Western/? processors) and would love to find a farm store or CSA near me. Can't say I trust TJ's after recent Salmon revelations--and of course I no longer buy at local chain stores any flesh foods. Help, Help.

Hmmm... I'll have to check this stuff out. I've often wondered where one would go around here to purchase a whole steer or even a lamb for that matter! We don't have a full freezer in our garage, but I certainly could not live without a 2nd refrigerator/freezer in my garage. Handy thing to have around! Great pics!

Yup, you're right. No grass-fed meat around here, unfortunately. At least not available in any easy way. The Linkery restaurant in North Park has - on occasion - local, pastured goat and lamb from a farm in Fallbrook , and may have found a new source for goat/beef/lamb from Fountain of Youth Farm in Ramona. However, there's still the issue of no processing plants for independent meat in the County to contend with. I wish I had the energy to convince some of these folks to start a meat CSA. Want to join forces?
